WHAT TO WEAR FOR FAMILY PHOTOS?!

Deciding what to wear for family photos can be just as daunting as finding the right photographer. These photos will be ones that you have for years to come, hang in your house, show to others and have to look back on in many, many years. It can seem overwhelming to think about the perfect outfits to wear that will coordinate and look good in photos, but it doesn't need to be! Use these tips to help pick out the perfect wardrobe for your family.

GENERAL TIPS

START WITH ONE PERSON.

Its so much easier to visualize the whole picture once you know what one piece of it will look like! Try starting with mom or daughter since women's clothings tends to have more color and pattern, and work from there.

COORDINATING COLORS, NOT MATCHING.

The days of everyone wearing a white shirt and matching are long gone. Instead, pick a couple colors and choose clothes that will fit in this color scheme. For example, soft colors (blush, light blue, grey) or warm colors (orange, brown, burgundy). If you want colorful, brighter images, you should choose a more vivid color scheme!

LOOK AT YOUR HOME DECOR.

Since you're probably going to be hanging these photos in your house, you want them to go with the color schemes of your decor. So if you have a lot of neutral, light tones in your home, don't wear dark and moody colors for your photos. Are the photos going to go in a nursery or child's room? Maybe go for brighter, more vivid colors!

PLAN AHEAD.

Once you book your family session, start thinking of clothing options right away. If you figure out the outfits in advance then you'll know that everything fits, is clean, and exactly where it is the day of the photos! Also look at the weather for the day. Nothing is worse than being miserable in a perfect outfit. If its cold, make sure to incorporate hats, jackets and warmer shoes. If its in summer, dress in layers so you can easily take off it you get too hot.

TEXTURES ARE YOUR FRIEND.

In photographs, its fun to have textures within outfits so don't be afraid of a couple accessories here and there! A scarf, tie, necklace, or belt can add that extra pop of texture which adds more to the image.

DON'T FORGET SHOES.

As we all know, shoes can make or break an outfit. In photos, this is still very true. Make sure everyone's shoes compliment the look the rest of your outfits are going for. Steer clear of athletic shoes or all white sneakers. For kiddos, avoid shoes with characters on them (this goes for all articles of their clothing!) - they tend to distract from the rest of the photo.

CONSIDER YOUR BACKGROUND.

If your taking photos in front of a backdrop, think about the colors you're wearing. You definitely don't want to be matching and blending into your background! You want to compliment it without actually becoming part of it.

LET THE KIDS HAVE INPUT.

Happy kids make for happy photos! If your kids absolutely dread wearing a certain type of clothing, like dresses or bowties, don't make them wear it for your photo session. The goal is for everyone to be comfortable and feel like their best selves for these pictures.

THINK CLASSIC.

These photos will be on your walls and treasured for many years to come. Choose simple, classic clothing to give them that timeless feel.

Now that you have a basic idea of what to wear, the fun begins! Here at Glare Studio, we want to create an environment where everyone is enjoying themselves and comfortable in front of the camera. This means just being you and letting us do all the rest!
